Kanawha Valley’s 3rd Annual Civil War Re-Enactment

DescriptionThis event will be an interactive educational event that the whole family can enjoy. Civil War era activities for the weekend include a ladies garden party, fashion show, ball and pie social, children’s activities, band concerts, church service, first person impressions, demonstrations, workshops, settlers vending period goods and garments. Confederate and civilian camps, competitive military drills, and, of course, the popular battle reenactments, with infantry, cavalry, artillery and medical units See the schedule of activities for a complete guide to the weekend activities. Field will be open for set-up at 9:00 AM May 4th.

The Blue Ridge Parway Flower Report

I saw this report and thought it might be interesting to our nature lovers. This is the Blue Ridge Parkway Wildflower Report for mid-April. It continues to be a warm spring in many parts of the country including here along the Blue Ridge.

The Trillium and Fire Pink are showing up way ahead of schedule. You might look for them in the James River area or around Roanoke in the Virginia section of the Parkway.

Heading south of Roanoke through Rocky Knob a few Flame and Pink Azaleas are beginning to show up again way ahead of schedule. In North Carolina between Blowing Rock and Spruce Pine you’ll find many violets along the trails that you may hike on the Parkway.

Chickweed is prominent along this section. Serviceberry trees are starting to pop out along the roadside. Bloodroot can be found along the Parkway—look for it near the Minerals Museum at Milepost 331.

Great year for the Dogwood Tree—beautiful blooms depending on the elevation throughout the area between Blowing Rock and Spruce Pine. Around the Linn Cove Viaduct and Linville Falls Bluets are covering the ground. Look for Trillium popping out around the Minerals Museum, too.

The Blue Ridge Parkway.

I have worked here near the Blue Ridge Parkway for around 20 or so year’s and I realize that most visitor’s do not know alot about the Parkway, only that it is a great place to drive and relax or spend the weekend. I found this information and thought I would pass it along. And I hope to do this ever so often. It will be about the Parkway itself and some of the events going on in the area. I hope you find it interesting.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Parkway and All-American Road in the United States, noted for its scenic beauty. It runs for 469 miles (755 km), mostly along the famous Blue Ridge, a major mountain chain that is part of the Appalachian Mountains. Its southern terminus is on the boundary between Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina, from which it travels north to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and offers access to the Skyline Drive, the major north/south artery through the Park. The two All-American Byways are separate and distinct. The Blue Ridge Parkway was built to connect Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Parkway is not a National Park, but is a National Scenic Byway and All-American Road, and is the most visited unit in the United States National Park System.
